summary
Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

I just read this book when my niece passed it onto me! Initially it never struck me that an author with merely his second book can leave such an everlasting feeling in one's mind compelling one to ponder upon the adversities of life! The torture, the pain, the lust everything does not seem to cease in one's mind! It has managed to leave a deeper imprint in my mind than the kite runner! Khaled hossini needs to acquaint the world with more such facts which expose the cruelties that women face in life just like Jean sasson!

a very remarkable and beautifully crafted story. It was sad, tragic and epic but yet so beautiful. As I turned each page of each chapter, I just couldn’t stop the tears. It isn’t based on fantasy it’s based on things which happen in reality.

amazing book! it makes us ponder upon the subject that we have parents, homes, we don’t live in war zones and that we are even provided with education. t’s taken me to a completely different level of thinking about the outside world. must read it!

All one woman's life revolves around is Love, unconditional and secure. Mariam and Laila produce a friendship with no bounds and love for each other along with respect. The life that the two women face and the trials and tribulations they face is what comprises this book. One of the best books I have read in all time.
