- When do you need to use an article with a noun phrase?
Outline - You will analyse the use of articles with nouns in context and learn to recognise when an article is needed or not in front of a noun. You will also test yourself by adding articles where necessary to a short formal text.
- The meanings of modal verbs
Outline - You will explore the uses and meanings of the main modal verbs used in formal writing and practise selecting the right one to use in different contexts.
- Reviewing dependent prepositions
Outline - In these activities you will review the use of prepositions with verbs, adjectives and nouns and practise using a concordancer to explore patterns of prepositional use.
- Reviewing verb groups
Outline - This activity will familiarise you with the structure of verb groups. You will focus on understanding how verb groups consisting of two or more words are formed.
- Using noun phrases instead of clauses
Outline - These activities provide practice in using noun phrases instead of clauses, to give your writing a more concise and formal style.
- Understanding choice of tense
Outline - These activities will help to raise your awareness of how your choice of tense can affect the meaning of what you say. You will explore tense usage and meaning in formal text and practise selecting appropriate tenses.
- Using colons and semi-colons
Outline - In these learning activities you will study the differences in use between these often-confused punctuation marks.
- Verbs followed by gerunds and/or infinitives
Outline -In these activities you will review this area of grammar and explore the use of gerunds or infinitives after certain verbs.
- Impersonal style and passive verb construction
Outline - You will explore how use of the passive voice and other devices help create certain effects in formal writing.
- Changing emphasis in a sentence
In these activities, you will study the effect of changing the position of adverbs and explore other means of lending emphasis to parts of a statement.
