  The Council for Science and Technology is the UK government's premier advisory body an science and technology issues of strategic importance to the United Kingdom, so it contributes to the development of top level, longer term policy. It was first established in 1993 and was re established in March 1998 to advice the Prime Minister about the United Kingdom's strategic policies and framework for supporting science and technology, and maintaining their key contribution to the nation's sustainable development.

  EPSRC supports research in engineering and the physical sciences for industries such as manufacturing, electronics, chemicals, transport, communications, construction, energy and aerospace, as well as pharmaceuticals, food, hotels and catering, banking, finance and leisure. It is the largest of the UK Research Councils in the UK.  
     
3. Medical Research Council

  The MRC aims to improve health by promoting research into all areas of medical and related science. It supports medical research through its research establishment; by awarding grants to individual scientists; and by supporting postgraduate students. The MRC supports research and training which helps the biotechnology, food, healthcare, medical instrumentation, pharmaceutical and other biomedical related industries.   
     
4. Natural Environmental Research Council

  NERC uses a budget about £220 million a year to fund scientific research in its own laboratories and in universities. About 2,700 people are employed in NERC establishment and a further 1,800 are funded annually through a variety of research and training awards in university departments and outside bodies. NERC focuses on delivering greater understanding of environmental issues, focusing its research on five major issues.

5. Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council

The PPARC directs and co-ordinates the funding of research in national and international programmes in particle physics , astronomy, cosmology and space science. It provides research grants and studentship to scientists in British Universities and ensure they have to world class facilities.

The PPARC manages UK involvement of international scientific bodies such European laboratory for Particle Physic(CERN) and the European Space Agency(ESA), which offers UK business access to commercial opportunities in Europe.

  AGRICOLA is a bibliographic database compiled and co-ordinated by the US Department of Agriculture. It is a major database in all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology, soil and water resource, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agricultural product, alternative farming practices, and food and nutrition. The database is split into two parts one for books searchable back as far as 1970 and the other for journal article as far back as 1982. This database is freely searchable for all.

  The primary purpose of the World Wide Web Journal of Biology is to create an international on-line open forum for rapid interactive peer-reviewed information exchange in the biological sciences. Links form references within the body of the articles to the National Library of Medicine's(NLM) on-line database of published research literature - MEDLINE, will provide rapid access for the reader to earlier supporting research while reading the article. In addition MEDLINE is now link to GenBank, another NLM archive managed by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information(NCBI) which contains an array of on-line databases. These links will allow the readership to conduct literature searches as well as similarity searches among gene, protein and phylogeny databases. Therefore, by providing links within the body of articles to these databases, The World Wide Web Journal of Biology is continuing the spirit of NLM's and NCBI's efforts in ' moving research ahead' by supplying' data you can compute on' with access to resources. Furthermost, electronic communication from readers via an interactive forum of information exchange in the World Wide Web Journal of Biology will help to foster global collaboration in science.
